Even with a veto-proof majority in both houses, the Kansas state legislature is unable to override the Democrat Governor’s veto of a bill that would prohibit gender surgeries on minors along with puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones.
Residents of Kansas are left scratching their heads as two RHINOs who originally voted for the bill chose to side with the Governor’s veto, thwarting the Republican’s attempt to override it.
The two Republicans who broke ranks and voted with Democrats are Susan Concannon and Jesse Borjon.
Concannon, when giving her rationale from the House floor, stated: “We hear of bullying and ask authorities to make it stop. We hear about mental health and suicide and ask why. We’re not listening to the impacted youth. Government involvement is not the answer.”
Her statement seems confusing and riddled with double-speak.
On the one hand, it would appear that she’s complaining about authorities not listening and providing answers when they have the opportunity to do so. On the other hand, it seems she doesn’t want the government to provide answers at all, even though they may have them.
She further acknowledges she voted for the bill prior to the veto but apparently had more time to think about it after the veto.
“I voted for this bill in the past due to concerns about the surgery,” she stated. “With further consideration, this bill is vague beyond the surgery. These decisions belong between the team of professionals and the parents. The youth need our help, not government overreach. To all who have reached out, I hear you, and vote to sustain the Governor’s veto.”
Concannon does not offer any specifics of vagueness “beyond the surgery,” only that they exist. She then dives head-long into the progressive talking points that the decision to have such surgeries and/or medications belongs to the doctors and patients and not the government.
Meanwhile, the other RINO who voted to sustain the Governor’s veto, Borjon, also commented on his support of the bill as it pertained to “prohibiting gender reassignment surgery” and “limiting” the use of hormone blockers. However, he was ultimately in agreement with the Governor’s veto because some parts of the bill “go too far in restricting mental and behavioral health care for children.”
Why would these two change their minds at the eleventh hour? Kansas residents will not soon forget this come November.
