Daniel Penny was found not guilty of negligent homicide in the killing of Jordan Neely.
Luigi Mangione allegedly killed United Healthcare CEO, Brian Thompson.
These are both homicides. A court decided that Daniel Penny committed justifiable homicide when he killed Jordan Neely, and Luigi Manione is eventually going to have his day in court over the killing of Brian Thompson.
What is truly telling, however, is not the killings themselves but the public reactions to them.
Jordan Neely either died because he is a black man in America and Daniel Penny felt like lynching him, or he died because he boarded a subway car and threatened to kill the people in it, and Daniel Penny cared enough about his fellow human beings to ensure that Jordan Neely did not kill any of them.
Brian Thompson either died because he was a greedy CEO making over $23 million a year who put profit over people, or he died because someone (allegedly Luigi Mangione) murdered him in cold blood.
In the case of Jordan Neely, I can pretty easily tell someone’s political affiliation based on whether or not they think he was lynched. Still, many people on both sides of the political spectrum seem to think the killing of Brian Thompson was justified.
In this episode of Cutting Through the Chaos, Wallace Garneau will dig into the details of both cases. We will explore our medical care system to see if United Healthcare really is a bad actor, and we will ask the following question: What do America’s views on vigilantism say about the future of ‘justice’ in our country?
