If you are a working American, this is probably the day you love to hate ⎯ tax day. However, most Americans I’ve met don’t understand how the income tax came to America, and why their ire should be focused on the states rather than the IRS.
Tax Day is the day every year when some people rush to file their returns on time, while others have already had their taxes done and are waiting for their refund.
Back in 1913, when the states ratified the Sixteenth Amendment, they fundamentally changed the relationship between the federal government and the American people, and it’s more than just one day of strife.
So, while you go around complaining about paying your taxes and the “Infernal Revenue Service,” let’s take some time and consider why we have a Tax Day, a federal income tax, and what those taxes are used for.
