I was a critical care nurse, and I’ve had clashing waves of cognitive dissonance processing what’s really going on. I still cannot reconcile the fact that in coronary care, in a big hospital in Melbourne city, we prided ourselves on the “door to needle time” which was the time taken to get the patient dosed up with thrombolytics, or into the catheter lab for angiography/plasty, when an ambulance arrived with a patient experiencing chest pain and ECG changes.
We treated the patient’s life, heart and brain like gold.
