Failing upward with forest fires. The reason LA is burning down is twofold:
1. The Delta Smelt. California does not always refill its water reservoirs as the environmental lobby insists that runoff, even on a year like this one where there was so much rain they called the rain ‘rivers’ of water, be diverted away from water reservoirs and into the Pacific Ocean to create the mix of fresh and saltwater the Delta Smelt prefers.
In the case of the Palisades reservoir, I understand that it was emptied eleven months ago out of fear that the reservoir cover had a tear. Why could that cover not be repaired, and the reservoir could not be refilled before fire season?
2. The Pacific Pocket Mouse. Clearing brush and creating fire breaks are instrumental practices in controlling wildfires in places that get as dry as Southern California, and as a consequence, controlled burns to clear out excessive underbrush and the creation of fire breaks used to be standard practice in California. Unfortunately, such practices disrupt the habitat of the Pacific Pocket Mouse and are thus not allowed in California any longer. The decision to cut $100 million from the fire control land management budget seems a bit reckless in hindsight. I also have to wonder how many Pacific Pocket Mice that were saved by not protecting the land from what are annual fires may have perished in the fires that also destroyed homes.
To those who lost homes and property in California: you have my heartfelt condolences, but at the same time, the vast majority of you voted over and over again for leaders like Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass, who cared more about Delta Smelt and Pacific Pocket Mice than about your lives and livelihoods.
To make matters worse, insurance providers in the area recently stopped providing fire insurance due to California’s refusal to fill its reservoirs or to take care of its land in terms of basic fire management techniques. As a consequence, those who have lost and are losing their homes are now uninsured against the fires that have destroyed their homes.
Join us on Cutting Through the Chaos to see not only who is at fault for the severity of the LA fires, but also to look at why it is that those on the left always seem to fail upwards into even larger positions of power.
Gavin Newsom still thinks he’ll be the next President.
