Earlier this week in California, Gustavo Garcia robbed a convenience store, shooting and killing one person, stole a truck, shot at buildings, drove the wrong way at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, and crashed into 4 vehicles. During the crime spree which started in Fresno, Garcia left 5 innocent citizens injured, one critically, and possibly another murder victim. The 36 year old illegal immigrant died in the car crash. Days before this a detainer was placed on him by ICE after he was arrested on a charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance. The Sheriff of Tulare County, Mike Boudreaux, expressed frustration that Garcia could not be held for ICE due to the Sanctuary City policy and SB-54. In years past, a detainer would be put on Garcia and he would have been turned over to ICE officials. Law enforcement no longer has that power. SB-54 was a party line vote by Democrats in California. Their thinking is that immigrants would feel safer going to police to report crimes or offer information if they were not at risk of detention. This is naïve and uninformed in my opinion. I’m pretty sure that most all of us are smarter now than we were as teenagers. I’m also sure most of us are smarter than we were, 20 years ago, 10 years ago, 5 years ago, 6 months ago and even yesterday. I’d also be secure in saying that over the years, social norms change, people grow and evolve in their thinking and actions, and what was – may or may not be what is now. I’m having a hard time with Kevin Hart being shamed to bow out of hosting the Oscars. What kind of Grinch-like people dig up tweets that are years old and use them as weapons? I don’t care about the Oscars, and won’t watch no matter who hosts, but to demean a person for a tweet from years before, and cause him to either grovel or lose a position he earned through hard work and years of doing right things is despicable and petty and hypocritical. This has been a banner year for the #METOO Movement. Allegations against men who have taken advantage of women in a variety of ways, from rape to inappropriate touching, have toppled many influential men from powerful positions these last couple of years. There have been women’s marches and rallies and the near destruction of a Supreme Court nominee, all in the name of women’s rights over their bodies. I’m more than curious ladies, then why NO OUTCRY this week over the dismissal of charges in the first case ever prosecuted in the United States against female genital mutilation? U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman of Detroit has declared the law banning FGM unconstitutional, dismissing the key charges against two Michigan doctors and six others accused of subjecting at least nine minor girls to the cutting procedure in the nation’s first FGM case. The news media has lost its way. They have forgotten why they exist and replaced their reason to exist with a mantra for their personal and political ideations of social justice. They have forgotten that the news is not about them. They have forgotten to report the news rather than make the news, or they add their biases to their report, or slant their news. They have remembered to leave out details that don’t fit their social views, though they may be critical to truth. They don’t apologize, they double down. Is it any wonder that Americans don’t trust them? Reporters used to report. They were tireless and dogged on their stories, but fair and informational. We don’t believe them now. They unabashedly add their bias and rhetoric to each story, manipulating the facts to manipulate our opinions and our votes. How do you explain 96% of all reporting is unfavorable to our President? Just a group of poor hungry refugees coming through Mexico looking for a better life. That is how Former President Obama spoke about the caravan headed to our Southern border. This is, of course, dramatically different than what he said as a Congressman and as President. This is a problem he did nothing about in his administration. The underplaying of this issue has been stunning. We hear so much about 4000 “migrants” headed to our border, but what we don’t hear is that in the month of October alone there were 51,000 such “migrants” crossing our border. In one month! 56% of those were not Mexican Nationals but from other places such as Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and more. We don’t know who these people are. We don’t know their criminal history, and many have criminal histories. There are families, and unaccompanied minors and young and old men and women. Almost all are unskilled, almost all are not eligible for asylum, and virtually all never show up to their hearing and disappear into the fabric of our Nation, to places far and wide. 107,000 families have been taken into custody in 2018 alone. Historically, it has not been the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to find the resources needed to provide officers with the training they need on a continuing basis to do their jobs effectively. This has been the purview of the municipalities, who approve budgets to sustain their law enforcement agencies. Today, city and county coffers are being stretched in ways we never anticipated. New areas of unexpected expenditures include additional social service, health, safety and human services for the homeless and illegal aliens; subsidies (including subsidized housing), increased costs in providing additional security and overtime for officers during public demonstrations; and the ever-growing municipal worker pension deficits. Municipalities can only stretch funds so far, and taxpayers can only bear so much of the burden for the administration of cities and counties. When budgets are finalized, usually the first to suffer is law enforcement training. Training is usually the last thing in any law enforcement agency’s budget. However, training is also the hub of the law enforcement wheel and the lack of officer training is always at the crux of any lawsuit against a municipality and its law enforcement agency.
