Students Against Mandates is a grassroots Canadian organization organized because of the tyrannical Canadian government policies in managing the COVID-19 pandemic. They are based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which, for Americans, is the Canadian province directly above North Dakota and Minnesota. Their story began in August 2021 after an unpleasant— though not completely unexpected — announcement landed in the inbox of their founder, Leigh Vossen. Manitoba’s colleges and universities have rolled out a new policy that students who fail to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be barred from their studies and attending campus.
There are no further explanations and no exceptions. To thousands of students, this was clearly and profoundly wrong. To their founder, it was a turning point – the final straw over the previous two years – that finally motivated her to muster the courage to do something. And so, Students Against Mandates (S.A.M.) was born.
Students Against Mandates describes itself as a community of proud critical thinkers who support data-backed decision-making. They oppose divisive vaccine mandates, discriminatory vaccine passports, and the tyranny that makes these unjust things possible. They believe in liberty and the freedom to make one’s own informed, personal health decisions—with zero coercion. They are committed to eliminating vaccine mandates across all college and university campuses, both in Canada and the US.
