In this episode, Al Johnson, Director of Research for Southeast Asia and Japan for NEC-SE, joins me as we examine the second—and third-order effects of the conflict in Gaza and its impact on the American home front. We also discuss the battlefield innovations used during the Israeli-Hamas War and how we should approach the antisemitism discussions that arise from the conflict.
In almost 220 days of conflict between Israel and Gaza, the continual transformation of the combatant’s techniques and technology continues to be refined. Just like in Ukraine, the application of drones and other methods introduces a hybrid old/new approach that Americans need to be aware of for any future war planning. However, on the US home front, the most significant impact of the Israel/Gaza fight is one of information.
As many Americans have discovered over the last 220 days, opinions about America’s ally, Israel, are sharply divergent. The impact this war and the American response to it domestically is having and will develop for the divergent Jewish American community is also of significant concern, as a relatively new form of Antisemitism begins to spread and might not be the one you usually think about. Are US policies intended to reduce Antisemitism fanning its flames? Alfred Johnson provides unique insights from the divergent US Jewish communities that offer new perspectives.
Alfred Johnson was a former US Army officer in charge of EOD and CIED, as well as host nation engagement in the CENTCOM and PACOM areas of operations. The US State Department awarded him the Franklin Award for his CIED programs in SE Asia. Since 2012, Alfred has investigated radical networks, examining conflict zones caused and exacerbated by information operations and historical information wars. In addition to his position at the Near East Center for Strategic Engagement, Alfred is the principal owner of Secure Point Investigations (SPI) in Washington State and the founder of the Historical Detective Agency (HDA).
