Most hospitals have independent medical staffs composed of community physicians. In that arrangement, hospitals serve as a venue for clinical practice, but the doctor is considered the “captain of the ship” for each and every patient. Hospitals must assert their medical staff has bylaws and that physicians have proof of training and competency.
Likewise, nursing and technical staff must undergo a similar process for their training and competency. Nowhere in hospital bylaws are hospitals given the power to overrule a doctor’s valid order to deliver treatment. In this issue of the Report, we spend time with Dr. Bradley Meyer1 from Des Moines, Iowa, after Dr. McCullough had spent time with him at the Hold Strong Conference and faculty dinner.2
This featured interview allows Dr. Meyer to describe his odyssey from military service to clinical practice and his first encounters with SARS-CoV-2, and the snowballing of events that led to his termination from hospital medical staff and his search for independent practice. Dr. Meyer describes a chilling case where he ordered ivermectin for a critical COVID-19 patient, and the hospital pharmacist and nursing staff did not execute that order. The patient died of SARS-CoV-2 respiratory illness. These and other vignettes that Dr. Meyer gives our audience are gripping and worth the time to listen.
