Allow me to make a controversial statement that should not be controversial: the decisions you make in your life are the primary determining factor in deciding what kind of life you will have.
Notice that I did not say ‘systemic racism’ or ‘white supremacy’ predetermines outcomes. Note, too, that I used the plural ‘decisions’ rather than the singular ‘decision.’
Many on the left will make two arguments against the notion that the decisions we make determine the outcomes we achieve.
The first one is that factors beyond our control, primarily race, make it much easier for some people to do well than for others to do well. In this way, someone born as white trailer-trash in the hills of Tennessee has far more opportunity than the daughters of Barack and Michelle Obama, as absurd as that might sound.
The second argument is that while the decisions we make could impact the lives we live, being able to make the right decisions at the right times requires a tremendous amount of luck.
The United States used to be the richest nation on Earth by GDP when we still practiced free market economics, which is to say when we left people alone to interact as they wished.
We also have to make decisions as a society, and the decisions we collectively make determine our collective future. Kamala Harris was going to take us further down the rabbit hole of socialism and suffering. Donald Trump is going to restore free markets and is going to be the first President to shrink the size of government in real terms since Dwight D. Eisenhower. We will all reap the benefits – including those who do not want Donald Trump as President. And nobody is beating J.D. Vance, so we can expect 12 years of uninterrupted MAGA policies.
We can debate whether or not America ever was truly ‘great,’ but certainly, taking our founding ideals and delivering them to all Americans will make this country great, even if we don’t want to throw the word ‘again’ at the end.
Join us in this week’s episode of Cutting Through the Chaos, where we will dismantle the ‘woke’ arguments against self-determination to show that we really do have control over our own lives.
