Shelter-in-place orders have been issued for residents in Conyers, Georgia. Authorities have also ordered a hard evacuation in the town about 40 miles east of Atlanta due to a large fire at a biolab. The original fire ignited around 5 am Sunday.
I-20 is being blocked in both directions between Salen Road and Turner Hill and the evacuation zone has been established. Officials in Rockdale County have kept residents informed throughout the day. Residents who live south of I-20 are safe.
Conyers Mayor Vince Evans said, “If you choose not to evacuate, please do not get out and ride around. Stay in place. Stay put. Either leave or stay, but don’t be wandering out in the city.”
Rockdale County Sheriff Leavitt said normal agencies that would respond to such an event are already stretched thin due to the area flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. A new evacuation site is set up at Scout Camp at 218 Scout Road in Covington, Georgia.
